Arduino Duemilanove
Continuing our tradition of difficult to pronounce Italian name, we’re happy to announce the Arduino Duemilanove (“2009”). This is the latest revision of the basic Arduino USB board, replacing the Diecimila. The Duemilanove automatically selects the appropriate power source (USB or external adaptor), eliminating the need for a power selection jumper. It also includes an easy to cut trace for disabling the board’s auto-reset (and a solder jumper for re-enabling it). It’s the easiest-to-use Arduino yet, even if the name is a mouthful (non-Italians should feel free to call it “2009”).
The release of the Arduino Duemilanove coincides with the launch of Massimo Banzi’s book, Getting Started with Arduino, from O’Reilly. We’re very happy that there’s now a printed introduction for people who are just starting out with Arduino. It’s a great complement to the more advanced Making Things Talk, by Tom Igoe (also from O’Reilly).
The Duemilanove will be replacing the Diecimila at our distributors over the coming weeks.

The Arduino Duemilanove (2009 in Italian) has the same form factor as previous generations. The specs are essentially identical to the Diecimila, but there have been a few changes to the hardware. The power source is no longer chosen using a jumper. A MOSFET and dual OPAMP have been added to the board to automatically selected between USB power and the external plug. Automatic hardware resets are optional now. Next to the USB port are two solder pads labeled RESET-EN. Cut the trace between them to kill the reset. If you ever want it back, just bridge the pads. Most early versions linux versions had a .wav file of Linus Torvalds telling us how he pronounces “linux”… No… Come to think of it, that didn’t really help much 😉

Congratulations with this new family member! Great to see that the third mounting hole is now actually usable with M3 bolts! The auto power select option is great when the Arduino is mounted inside a project box or enclosure!

BEHOLD!… the Arduino USB board has evolved from the old “Decemilia” to the new “Deumilanove”! Just like a fine wine, the Arduino keeps getting better over the course of time.
The new Deumilanove offers a few improvements….
