With Arpuro, Signal Analysis Lab ensures air quality in harsh industrial environments

The Arduino MKR series allows innovators to support higher HSE standards in mining, metallurgy, and construction sectors.

THE CHALLENGE

Creating a reliable, connected solution to monitor particulate matter.

Signal Analysis Lab (SAL) specializes in real-time airborne dust monitoring, utilizing precision sensors and robust data analytics to ensure accurate air quality assessments in harsh industrial environments. Renowned for enhancing health, safety, and environmental (HSE) monitoring, SAL serves sectors like mining, metallurgy, and construction, with key clients including Elkem Tana, the world’s largest quartzite mine, and various offshore and shipping companies.

Their flagship product, Arpuro, continuously measures various types of particulate matter (PM2.5, respirable fraction, PM10, and total suspended particles) along with humidity and temperature in industrial environments. With easy installation, automatic connectivity, self-cleaning functionality, and a user-friendly interface, Arpuro enhances health and safety compliance, reduces the risk of respiratory diseases, and improves environmental management through comprehensive analytics.

“Arduino has enabled us to rapidly prototype and deploy our product, making the development process efficient and helping us swiftly bring innovative solutions to the market – ultimately resulting in great competitive edge, and a solution we are proud of.”

OUR SOLUTION

The Arduino MKR platform allowed SAL to streamline development, overcoming protocol integration challenges.

During the product development phase, SAL faced significant challenges integrating multiple communication protocols, including Wi-Fi®, LoRaWAN®, and LTE-M. This complexity risked slowing down the design cycle, delaying product releases, and impacting market competitiveness. To overcome these hurdles, they required a rapid iteration system to ensure a swift time-to-market.

The Arduino MKR series emerged as the ideal solution, offering the necessary flexibility to easily explore various communication protocols, as well as support for standard chipsets. Familiarity with Arduino and its extensive open-source libraries allowed the SAL engineering team to quickly test designs and expand functionality with native C++ code. What’s more, the open-source approach reduced costs and enabled SAL to efficiently customize the solution to meet specific requirements.

Signal Analysis Lab built its solution with Arduino to:

Reduce time-to-market for an innovative solution

Develop and customize a new product, leveraging in-house skills

Save on prototyping and, later, on manufacturing

Rely on a flexible platform that supports multiple communication protocols

WHAT'S NEXT

A successful launch is the first step to scaling up, expanding to more clients and countries over time.

Having successfully launched Arpuro in Norway, SAL looks forward to refining the platform and to expand to Italy, Paraguay, China – and anywhere Arpuro can be put to work in the mining and metallurgical process industry. “We would recommend Arduino products due to the platform’s flexibility, ease of use, and extensive library support, which significantly streamline the development process,” concludes Geir Kulia, CEO of Signal Analysis Lab.
